Student Discounts in London

London is expensive, but transport, theatre and art all have real deals for students and under-26s. These are the ones worth setting up first.

Transport: set this up first

  • 18+ Student Oyster photocard: 30% off Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes. You can also pay as you go with it, but pay-as-you-go fares are not discounted.
  • Add a 16-25 Railcard to your Oyster: gives 1/3 off pay-as-you-go off-peak fares and daily caps on the Tube, London Overground, Elizabeth line and most National Rail services in London. It works on the student photocard or a standard adult Oyster card.
  • Daily capping: however many journeys you make in a day, the fare is capped.

Which one saves more depends on how you travel. If you travel every day, compare the discounted Travelcard price with what you would pay in daily caps; if you travel mostly off-peak and on fewer days, pay as you go with a 16-25 Railcard added may cost less. Work it out with your own journeys in TfL’s fare finder before buying a season ticket.

Museums and galleries

The British Museum’s permanent collection is free; booking a free ticket ahead gives priority entry on busy days, and it stays open until 20:30 on Fridays. For paid exhibitions, Tate Collective is free for 16–25-year-olds worldwide and gives £5 tickets to all Tate exhibitions (bring up to three friends aged 16–25), 20% off in Tate cafés and 10% off in Tate shops. Bring ID to prove your age.

Everyday savings in London

Many London shops take student discounts through apps: see Boots, ASOS and Sephora, and the full UK student discounts guide. For cinema, see the cinema student prices. If you need a bank account with an interest-free overdraft, compare UK student bank accounts.

Most theatre and gallery deals for young people go by age, not student status. If you are 26 or older, check the student standby and student ticket options instead.
