Washington is one of the cheapest big cities for culture: most museums are free for everyone, and the Kennedy Center has a free student ticket program.

Free museums

The Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo in DC are free for everyone. A few need a free pass or ticket booked ahead: the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Air and Space Museum in DC and the National Zoo. The National Gallery of Art is also always free, open daily 10 am–5 pm, with no passes needed for galleries and exhibitions.

Because these are free, you do not need a student ID in DC museums. Book the free passes ahead if you plan to visit on a weekend or holiday.

Getting around: Metro U-Pass

Through the U-Pass, students at participating colleges get unlimited Metro rides for about $1 a day when the whole school takes part, or about $1.75 a day in the opt-in version, compared with about $7.20 a day in regular fares. Metro’s board expanded the program in February 2026 to 43 eligible colleges and universities from fall 2026. Your school decides whether it joins and which students can enroll, so ask your transportation office.

Trips and everyday spending

For trips to New York or Boston, Amtrak takes 15% off many fares for students aged 17–24. Compare Uber One for Students and Student DashPass if you use rides or delivery often.
